Our keynote speaker was Chu Kosaka, a Japanese Christian gospel singer. On one of his CDs I saw his name spelled Chew! He shared many stories about his life, and the overal theme was encouraging contemporary music in churches. I'll translate/paraphrase one thing I remember him saying "Many Japanese people spend the whole week long, Monday through Saturday, at work in drudgery. If they were to go to church on Sunday, what are they most likely to experience? Slow music and a long sermon that very much resembles a funeral service. Why would they want to come? We need to change that."
